What does John 2:6 mean?
These stone water jars were stationed at the wedding in Cana for a very practical purpose: Jewish law required ceremonial washing before eating, so hosts kept vessels filled with fresh water for their guests. The fact that there were six large pots (each holding 20-30 gallons) shows this was a significant household prepared to observe these traditions properly. In the next moment, Jesus will transform all this water into wine, which makes the detail about these ordinary jars doing their ordinary job—holding water for washing—a beautiful setup for the extraordinary miracle that's about to happen.
