What does John 19:21 mean?
The Jewish leaders were desperate to change the inscription Pilate had placed on Jesus' cross because calling him "the King of the Jews" made it sound like an official title or claim they were acknowledging. By insisting it say "he said" instead, they wanted to make clear this was just Jesus' own false boast, not something they recognized as true. It's a small detail that reveals how much they wanted to distance themselves from any association with his kingship, even in his final moments. Their concern shows how threatening they found his challenge to their authority, right up to the end.
