What does John 19:20 mean?
The sign posted above Jesus on the cross wasn't hidden away on some distant hill, but placed where crowds could actually see it. Jerusalem was packed with people during Passover, and the execution site was close enough to the city that many could read what was written there. The fact that the inscription appeared in three languages—Hebrew (the local language), Latin (the language of Roman power), and Greek (the common language of trade across the Mediterranean)—meant that almost anyone passing by could understand the accusation against him. It's a detail that shows how publicly Jesus died and how his identity as "King of the Jews" was announced to the whole world, whether they believed it or not.
