What does John 18:8 mean?

In this tense moment during his arrest, Jesus is reminding the soldiers who he is, even as they come to take him. He's not denying his identity or trying to escape, but instead using his authority to protect his disciples from being arrested alongside him. It's a profound act of sacrifice: Jesus insists on taking the full weight of what's about to happen, so that those he loves can go free. There's something deeply moving about how he faces his own suffering while making sure others don't have to share it.
