John 18:34
“Jesus answered him, “Do you say this by yourself, or did others tell you about me?””
What does John 18:34 mean?
Jesus turns Pilate's question back on him in a way that cuts through all the noise and politics surrounding his trial. He's asking whether Pilate has genuinely observed something about Jesus himself, or whether he's simply repeating accusations he's heard from the crowd and the religious leaders. It's a moment of real tenderness, actually, an invitation for Pilate to think carefully about what he actually believes rather than just going along with what everyone else is saying. Jesus seems to be giving Pilate a chance to examine his own heart and decide what he really thinks about the man standing in front of him.
