What does John 18:14 mean?

Caiaphas, the high priest, had suggested to the Jewish council that it would be practical and necessary for Jesus to die instead of the whole nation facing Roman destruction. John includes this moment to show how Jesus's death was being discussed and decided among the religious leadership, even though the irony is that what Caiaphas meant as cold political calculation actually foreshadowed something far deeper. The Gospel writer hints that God was working through these events in ways the conspirators didn't fully understand, turning a cynical strategy into the means of salvation. It's a sobering reminder of how human self-interest and fear can lead people to rationalize things that contradict their deepest values, yet God can work redemption even through our worst choices.
