What does John 18:11 mean?
In this moment, Peter has just sliced off a servant's ear, trying to protect Jesus from arrest. Jesus stops him and asks a profound question: will he refuse the suffering God has given him? The "cup" is a biblical image for what someone must endure, their appointed portion. Jesus is saying that what lies ahead—his trial, his death—isn't something happening to him against God's will. It's what the Father has given him to do. Drinking it means accepting it fully, not fighting against it. There's deep comfort here for anyone struggling through something they didn't choose. Jesus models acceptance not because suffering is good, but because sometimes enduring it faithfully is how God works redemption and love into the world.
