What does John 18:10 mean?
In this moment of panic and misplaced loyalty, Peter grabbed a weapon and lashed out violently when soldiers came to arrest Jesus in the garden. He managed to cut off the ear of Malchus, a servant of the high priest, in what was likely a desperate attempt to protect his teacher. What Peter saw as defending Jesus was actually a human reaction born from fear rather than understanding God's plan, since Jesus had already accepted what was about to happen. This incident sets up one of the most poignant contrasts in John's account: while Peter fought to prevent Jesus's arrest through force, Jesus allowed himself to be taken peacefully, and in Luke's version, he even heals the servant's wound, showing radical forgiveness in the face of violence.
