What does John 16:29 mean?
The disciples have finally caught up. Throughout John's Gospel, Jesus has been speaking in metaphors and parables, leaving them confused and frustrated, but now in these closing moments before his arrest, he's laid everything bare. They believe they understand him at last, that the fog has lifted and they can see clearly. What makes this moment poignant is that Jesus is about to show them they're still mistaken. Just after this, he predicts they'll scatter and abandon him, proving that understanding his words intellectually is different from truly grasping who he is and what's about to happen. It's a gentle reminder for all of us that sometimes we think we've got it all figured out, right before life humbles us again.
