John 15:5
“I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
What does John 15:5 mean?
Jesus uses the image of a grapevine to describe how our spiritual life works. Just as branches can only produce grapes when they're connected to the vine and drawing nourishment from it, we can only truly flourish when we remain connected to him through trust, prayer, and obedience. The word "remains" here means an ongoing, living connection, not just a one-time belief, but a day-to-day staying close to Jesus. When we live this way, fruitfulness follows naturally, whether that's love, joy, peace, or the good work God calls us to do, but when we try to live without that connection, we find ourselves blocked and ineffective, no matter how hard we try.
