John 15:22
“If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.”
What does John 15:22 mean?
Jesus is saying something that sounds harsh but is actually about accountability and grace. When God shows up and speaks clearly through His presence and words, people can no longer claim ignorance, and that changes what they're responsible for. He's not saying these people had no sin before He arrived, but rather that His direct teaching and example removed any excuse for rejecting Him. This matters especially for those who witnessed Jesus firsthand, heard His message, and still chose to turn away. He's pointing out that the clarity of His presence made their choice deliberate, not accidental. For us today, it's a reminder that when we encounter God's truth, directly or through Scripture, we have real responsibility to respond to it. But there's also comfort here: the same God who teaches with clarity and makes our choices meaningful is also the God who offers forgiveness when we do fail.
