““I command these things to you, that you may love one another.”
What does John 15:17 mean?
Jesus is wrapping up his final teaching before going to the cross, speaking to his disciples about what truly matters. He's not asking nicely or suggesting an idea, he's giving them a direct command: love each other. The reason he makes this a command rather than just advice is because love isn't always something we feel like doing, especially when we're tired, hurt, or frustrated with each other. This love he's talking about isn't sentimental or easy, it's a commitment to genuinely care for one another's wellbeing and growth, even when it costs something.
