John 15:16
“You didn’t choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatever you will ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.”
What does John 15:16 mean?
Jesus is reassuring his followers that their relationship with him isn't based on their own merit or efforts—he initiated it. He chose them specifically and gave them a purpose: to live in a way that produces lasting good in the world (the "fruit" he mentions elsewhere means things like love, justice, healing, and transformed lives). Because they're in this chosen relationship with him, they can approach God with real confidence, asking for what they need in Jesus's name and trusting they'll be heard. This hits especially hard if you've ever felt like you had to earn your way into belonging somewhere. Jesus is saying the opposite: you're already chosen, already have a purpose, already have access to God's help. Your job is simply to step into that reality and let it bear fruit around you.
