John 14:5
“Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?””
What does John 14:5 mean?
Thomas is voicing what many of us feel when facing uncertainty: how do we move forward when we don't understand the destination or the path? He's asking an honest question that comes from genuine confusion rather than doubt. In this moment, Jesus has just told his disciples he's going away to prepare a place for them, but they haven't grasped what that means or what comes next for them. Jesus responds by revealing something profound about the way forward, not as a map or instruction manual, but as a relationship. The beautiful thing about Thomas's question is that it opens the door for one of Scripture's most comforting promises, reminding us that sometimes not knowing the way is exactly where we need to be to discover who the Way truly is.
