John 14:28
“You heard how I told you, ‘I go away, and I come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I said ‘I am going to my Father;’ for the Father is greater than I.”
What does John 14:28 mean?
Jesus is preparing his disciples for his departure and asking them to trust his words about returning to them. He gently challenges them: if they truly loved him, they'd feel joy rather than only grief at his leaving, because going to his Father is something good and glorious. In saying "the Father is greater than I," Jesus isn't diminishing himself but pointing to the natural order of things, much like a son honoring his father. He's inviting them to see beyond their immediate loss to something larger, reminding them that his return to the Father serves a purpose that ultimately benefits them too.
