He, leaning back, as he was, on Jesus’ breast, asked him, “Lord, who is it?”

What does John 13:25 mean?

In this intimate moment at Jesus' final meal with his disciples, John (the writer of this Gospel, often called "the beloved disciple") is reclining so close to Jesus that he can lean back against his chest. When Jesus has just announced that one of them will betray him, John does what any of us might do in confusion and concern: he turns to the person right there with him and asks directly. It's a picture of both the closeness John felt to Jesus and the very human impulse to seek answers from someone we trust when something troubling is happening around us. This detail reminds us that even in moments of betrayal and darkness, Jesus allowed his followers to come near to him with their questions and fears.
