What does John 13:16 mean?

Jesus is teaching his disciples about the nature of service and humility. He's reminding them that if he, their master and teacher, has just washed their feet like a servant, then they should be willing to serve each other too. No one in the chain of authority is "too important" to do humble work. This applies to us in a gentle but straightforward way: whatever our role or status in life, we're all called to a similar kind of humility and willingness to help others. The point isn't that we should feel small or worthless, but rather that serving others faithfully, without ego, is actually noble and consistent with following Jesus.
