John 13:14
“If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.”
What does John 13:14 mean?
Jesus had just done something shocking: he got down and washed his disciples' feet, a task reserved for servants in that culture. By doing this, he was showing them what love actually looks like in practice, not just in words. When he tells them to wash each other's feet, he's not necessarily talking about literal foot-washing (though some communities still practice it as a remembrance). He's calling them to serve one another with the same humility and care he just demonstrated, even in the small, unglamorous ways that nobody wants to volunteer for. If the Teacher himself took the lowest position, his followers can't claim they're too important or too proud to help carry someone else's burden.
