John 13:12
“So when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?”
What does John 13:12 mean?
Jesus had just done something shocking: the Teacher, the one they recognized as their Master, had wrapped a towel around his waist and washed the dirt and dust from each disciple's feet, a task normally reserved for the lowest servants. Now, sitting back down after putting on his robe, he asks them if they understand what just happened. He wasn't asking because they didn't see the action with their eyes. He was asking if they grasped what he was teaching them by example: that leadership means humble service, not power over others. In a world obsessed with status and honor, Jesus was inverting everything to show his followers what it looks like to love deeply. The question lingers in the air, inviting them (and us) to think about what we do when we're in a position to serve or be served.
