John 12:47
“If anyone listens to my sayings, and doesn’t believe, I don’t judge him. For I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.”
What does John 12:47 mean?
Jesus is describing his primary mission here, and it's remarkably gentle. He's saying that even when people hear his words and reject them, judgment isn't his immediate concern or role. His purpose in coming to earth was rescue, not condemnation, so he doesn't step into the role of judge over those who don't believe. This doesn't mean there are no consequences to rejecting him, but it shifts where the focus lies. Jesus came offering life and restoration, not condemnation. If you're someone who struggles with faith or has doubts, this verse suggests you won't be met with harshness from Jesus himself, but rather with an invitation toward healing and wholeness. The judgment described elsewhere in scripture is something that exists, but it's not what Jesus came to do in his earthly ministry.
