What does John 12:34 mean?
The crowd here is wrestling with a contradiction they've heard in their religious tradition. Jewish teaching spoke of a Messiah who would reign forever, but Jesus has just said the Son of Man must be "lifted up" (a reference to his coming crucifixion). These two things seemed incompatible to them: how could their eternal king die? What makes this moment poignant is that the crowd is actually asking a sincere question, even if they don't fully understand what they're asking.
