What does John 12:31 mean?

Jesus speaks these words right before his arrest and crucifixion, knowing his death is imminent. He's saying that his sacrifice will expose and ultimately defeat the spiritual forces—personified as "the prince of this world"—that oppose God and lead people into sin and darkness. In that moment of apparent weakness and defeat on the cross, something paradoxically powerful happens: evil's true nature is revealed and its grip on humanity is broken. This isn't about the world ending, but about a decisive spiritual turning point where Christ's love and truth prove stronger than the powers that enslave people.
