What does John 12:30 mean?
Just before this moment, Jesus asked his Father to glorify his name, and a voice thundered from heaven saying "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again." The disciples heard it and were startled, some thinking it was thunder or an angel. Jesus is explaining that God's dramatic response wasn't really about confirming Jesus himself, since Jesus already knew his Father's character and purpose. Instead, God spoke aloud so the people around him would hear it, witness it, and have their faith strengthened as they faced the difficult truth of his coming death. It's a tender reminder that sometimes God acts not for the person closest to him, but for those who are struggling to believe or understand. Even in his most important moments, Jesus was thinking about what his followers needed to hear.
