What does John 11:55 mean?

As Passover approached, Jewish pilgrims traveled to Jerusalem from surrounding regions, and many arrived early to undergo ritual purification before the festival. This wasn't unusual, it was part of the faithful practice of preparing themselves spiritually and ceremonially for one of the most important celebrations in the Jewish calendar. The context here matters because Jesus is also moving toward Jerusalem during this same season, and soon after these verses, His final Passover and crucifixion will unfold. The ordinary rhythms of faith and tradition that these pilgrims are following will intersect with something extraordinary, though they don't yet know it.
