“Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go also, that we may die with him.””
What does John 11:16 mean?
Thomas's words here reveal both loyalty and despair. Jesus had just announced he was going back to Judea to see Lazarus, even though the religious leaders there wanted to kill him, and Thomas recognizes this mission could be fatal. Rather than hold Jesus back, Thomas commits to following him anyway, urging the other disciples to do the same, even if it means death. What's striking is that Thomas isn't being cynical or sarcastic, though his tone suggests he sees the danger clearly. He's saying, in effect, "If this is where Jesus is going, then we go too, whatever the cost." This moment shows us that Thomas (later known for his doubt) was actually capable of profound courage and devotion. Sometimes the people we remember for one moment of weakness reveal unexpected strength in others.
