“The hired hand flees because he is a hired hand, and doesn’t care for the sheep.”
What does John 10:13 mean?
Jesus is describing someone who tends sheep only because it's a job, not because he loves the animals or feels responsible for them. When danger comes, this worker abandons the flock without hesitation because he has no real investment in their wellbeing. He's contrasting this with a true shepherd who stays and protects what he cares about, which Jesus says is how he himself relates to us. The image cuts to something true about human nature: we tend to give our best effort to things and people we genuinely love, but we're quick to walk away from obligations that feel merely transactional.
