John 10:1

What does John 10:1 mean?
Jesus is drawing a picture his listeners would recognize instantly: a shepherd's pen where sheep are kept safe. The proper way in is through the gate, where the gatekeeper knows you and lets you pass. Anyone sneaking over the walls in darkness has no good reason to be there, so Jesus calls them what they are—a thief and a robber. He's warning his followers against false leaders who try to bypass trust and authority to gain power over people's hearts. These aren't shepherds called by God; they're exploiters looking to use others for their own gain. Later in this same chapter, Jesus reveals himself as the true door and the good shepherd, the one whose way is open and honest, not deceptive. If you're listening to spiritual voices in your life, this invitation to discernment still stands: does this person lead you closer to truth and love, or are they trying to manipulate you into serving their own interests?
