“Jesus answered him, “Because I told you, ‘I saw you underneath the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these!””
What does John 1:50 mean?
Jesus is responding to Nathanael, who was amazed that Jesus knew he'd been sitting under a fig tree even though they'd never met. Rather than letting Nathanael's faith stop at this moment of wonder, Jesus gently redirects him: believing because of a miraculous sign of Jesus's knowledge is just the beginning. He's essentially saying, "If you think that's impressive, wait and see what real faith will reveal to you." This speaks to something many of us experience in our own journey with God. We often get stuck celebrating small confirmations or moments when God seems to confirm His presence in obvious ways. But Jesus invites us deeper, toward a faith that trusts in larger, more transformative realities. Those "greater things" include not just knowing the future or hidden facts, but encountering the fullness of who Jesus is and what He came to accomplish.
