What does John 1:25 mean?

Some religious leaders were puzzled by John the Baptist's authority to baptize. In their understanding, only the Messiah, the returning prophet Elijah, or another major prophetic figure would have the right to perform such a significant ritual. John was doing something that seemed to belong only to someone far greater than himself, so they wanted to know what gave him that right. His answer, which follows, reveals that he saw himself as simply preparing the way for Jesus, finding his purpose not in his own importance but in pointing others toward someone greater. It's a beautiful picture of humility in service.
