What does Job 5:1 mean?
Eliphaz is asking Job a pointed question during their debate about suffering. He's suggesting that Job's complaints won't find help anywhere in the divine realm because Job hasn't lived righteously enough to deserve it. It's a harsh moment, offered as if it's wisdom, but it reflects the friends' fundamental misunderstanding of Job's situation. If you're reading this and feeling abandoned by both heaven and earth, it's worth knowing that the entire book of Job eventually challenges this kind of thinking.
