Job 36:11
“If they listen and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.”
What does Job 36:11 mean?
Elihu is speaking here to Job, offering what sounds like a straightforward promise: obedience brings blessing, plain and simple. On the surface, it's comforting—the idea that if we align ourselves with God, good things will follow. But this verse sits in the middle of Job's story, where a righteous man has lost everything despite his faithfulness. That context matters. Elihu means well, but he's offering an incomplete picture of how God works in the world. Prosperity and pleasure do sometimes follow obedience, and there's real wisdom in serving God faithfully. Yet the book of Job ultimately teaches us that suffering isn't always a sign of unfaithfulness, and blessing isn't always immediate or visible in material ways. If you're going through a difficult season, this verse isn't meant to suggest you've done something wrong. Instead, it can remind you that serving God is still worthwhile, even when the rewards aren't obvious right now, and that genuine flourishing—which might look different than we expect—comes from trusting him.
