What does Job 3:12 mean?

Job is expressing the deepest kind of despair here, wishing he had never been born or cared for as an infant. He's asking why his mother's body received him at birth and why she nursed him, since life has become so unbearably painful that he questions whether being born was a mercy at all. This comes early in Job's suffering, when the weight of loss and pain is so fresh and crushing that he can barely find a reason to go on living. Many people in dark seasons recognize this feeling, even if they wouldn't use the same language. What Job is really saying is: "I wish I had never existed," which is often how profound suffering can make us feel, even when intellectually we know things can change. His honesty here, uncomfortable as it is, opens space for real conversation about grief and desperation rather than pretending everything is fine.
