What does Job 3:11 mean?

Job is at the lowest point of his suffering, covered in boils, having lost his children and wealth, and his words here reflect the raw despair of someone who sees no way forward. He's not asking these questions because he expects answers, but because the pain feels so unbearable that he wishes he'd never been born at all. This is one of the most honest expressions of suicidal despair in the Bible, and it matters that scripture doesn't pretend such darkness doesn't exist or try to smooth it over. Job's friends will later try to correct him, but in this moment, the text simply lets him grieve and rage. If you're in a place of similar hopelessness, know that expressing these feelings to someone you trust—a counselor, pastor, or crisis line—is not weakness but a step toward healing.
