What does Job 28:5 mean?
Job is describing how the earth yields food for us above ground, while beneath the surface lies something transformed and refined, as if by intense heat. He's painting a picture of the earth's generosity in two layers: the visible abundance that sustains our bodies, and the hidden depths where precious things form under pressure and time. This verse comes near the end of a long meditation on where true wisdom comes from, and Job seems to be suggesting that just as the earth conceals its riches deep below, wisdom itself is hidden and hard-won. It's a beautiful reminder that what nourishes us often comes from things we never see or fully understand.
