What does Job 28:14 mean?
Job is speaking about wisdom here, and these lines capture something deeply human: the feeling that no matter where we look, we can't find what we're really searching for. He's personifying the ocean depths and seas as if they're being asked, "Is wisdom here?" and they answer honestly, "No, it's not with us." This comes near the end of Job's long struggle, after he's lost everything and his friends have offered unhelpful advice. He's recognizing that true wisdom isn't hidden in some physical location or accessible through money, trade routes, or human effort alone. The image of searching the deepest, most mysterious parts of creation and still coming up empty is meant to humble us and point to something larger. In Job's world (and maybe in ours too), the wisdom that truly matters—understanding suffering, knowing how to live well, finding peace—can't be dredged up or purchased. It has to come from somewhere else entirely, from God.
