““Acquaint yourself with him, now, and be at peace. Thereby good shall come to you.”
What does Job 22:21 mean?
Eliphaz is urging Job to stop resisting God and instead turn toward him with openness and trust. The word "acquaint" suggests a deliberate choice to know someone, to let your guard down and truly connect, much like how you'd build a friendship. When we stop fighting against what we can't control and instead lean into relationship with God, Eliphaz promises that peace and goodness naturally follow. This comes near the end of Job's suffering, when his friends are pressing him to reconcile with God, believing that his troubles stem from hidden sin. Whether or not Eliphaz is right about Job's situation, the underlying idea rings true for many of us: peace often arrives not through solving everything on our own, but through surrendering our grip and allowing ourselves to be known by, and to know, something larger than ourselves.
