What does Job 21:28 mean?
Job is challenging his friends' assumptions about how the world works. They've been insisting that wickedness always leads to destruction and that the righteous always prosper, but Job is pointing out that wicked people often live in grand houses and die comfortable deaths. He's asking his friends where the evidence is for their confident claims that the wicked are punished in this life. This verse captures something many of us recognize in our own experience: sometimes the people doing wrong seem to get away with it, at least for a while. Job isn't saying God doesn't care about justice, but he's pushing back against the idea that we can always see God's judgment playing out in the present moment. His honesty about life's unfairness, even in the midst of his suffering, makes space for others to ask hard questions too.
