What does Job 17:3 mean?
Job is asking God to put something on the line, to stake his own integrity on Job's innocence the way a person would pledge collateral in a legal agreement. Job feels so completely abandoned and misunderstood, not just by his friends but by God himself, that he's desperately asking God to commit to him, to publicly stand as his guarantor. The "striking hands" refers to an ancient practice of sealing an agreement or making a pledge through a handshake or symbolic gesture. Job is essentially saying: "God, will you publicly vouch for me? Will you bind yourself to my defense?" It's the cry of someone in unbearable pain who needs to know that at least one voice, God's voice, will confirm that his suffering isn't proof of his guilt. The raw honesty here is striking, even in its desperation.
