What does Job 15:9 mean?
Eliphaz is challenging Job's claims to special wisdom or insight into his suffering. After Job has questioned his friends' explanations for his pain, Eliphaz essentially says, "Who do you think you are?" as if to put Job back in his place. The underlying assumption is that they, as experienced observers of life, already understand everything worth knowing about how God works and why people suffer. This moment captures something painfully human: how easy it is for us to assume we've figured things out and to dismiss someone else's experience as coming from arrogance or foolishness. If you've ever been suffering and had someone imply you just don't understand how the world really works, you know how small this can make you feel. The tragedy here is that Eliphaz's confidence blinds him to the very real mystery of Job's situation.
