“Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself; for emptiness shall be his reward.”
What does Job 15:31 mean?
Eliphaz, one of Job's friends, is warning against a kind of self-deception that leads nowhere. He's saying that if you build your life on things that are hollow—false hopes, empty promises, or delusions about how the world works—you'll end up with exactly what you put in: nothing of real value. It's a caution about the danger of fooling yourself, thinking that shortcuts or illusions can substitute for genuine truth and substance. The image is sobering but also, in a way, honest: the emptiness we chase is all we'll get.
