Job 1:10
“Haven’t you made a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.”
What does Job 1:10 mean?
Satan is accusing God of playing favorites with Job, suggesting that of course Job is faithful—he's been protected and prosperous, so what does his loyalty cost him? The "hedge" is a barrier of protection that Satan sees as the reason Job has nothing to complain about and therefore no real test of his faith. What's powerful here is that Satan inadvertently acknowledges God's goodness and provision in Job's life, even while twisting it into an accusation. He's implying that faith built on blessing is shallow, that anyone would love God if life was comfortable. This sets up the heart of Job's story: what happens to faith when the hedge comes down and everything falls apart? For many of us facing difficult seasons, this verse might resonate with a hard question too—who are we when the protection and blessings feel removed?
