What does Jeremiah 9:6 mean?

Jeremiah is speaking God's heartbreak over a people so surrounded by lies and dishonesty that truth has become nearly invisible to them. When deception becomes the air we breathe, everyday and normal, we lose the ability to recognize what's real, including God's character and presence. God isn't just frustrated by the lying itself, but by what it does to our relationship with him: it creates distance and prevents us from knowing him. There's an invitation hidden in this diagnosis, though, because naming the problem is the first step toward seeking something truer and more solid than whatever false comfort the deceit had offered.
