Jeremiah 9:5
“Everyone will deceive their neighbors, and will not speak the truth. They have taught their tongue to speak lies. They weary themselves commiting iniquity.”
What does Jeremiah 9:5 mean?
Jeremiah is describing a society so broken by sin that dishonesty has become the default language, the thing people practice until lying feels natural. The prophet isn't making an observation about one bad person, but about a whole culture where truth-telling has become almost extinct, and the effort people put into deception actually exhausts them more than honesty would. What makes this passage especially poignant is the recognition that this state didn't happen overnight. People "taught their tongue to speak lies," suggesting we can actually train ourselves into deception through repetition, until falsehood becomes our first instinct. The exhaustion Jeremiah mentions is real too: maintaining lies, keeping stories straight, managing who believes what—it's spiritually and emotionally draining work. The prophet is inviting his people to see how much damage they're doing to themselves and each other by choosing the harder path of dishonesty.
