Jeremiah 9:23
“Yahweh says, “Don’t let the wise man glory in his wisdom. Don’t let the mighty man glory in his might. Don’t let the rich man glory in his riches.”
What does Jeremiah 9:23 mean?
God is gently redirecting where we place our confidence and pride. The prophet lists three things that seem genuinely impressive in any culture—intelligence, strength, and wealth—and says they're not the foundation we should build our identity on. These gifts can fade, fail us in crisis, or become sources of arrogance that isolate us from others and from God. The verse continues with what we *should* glory in: understanding and knowing God.
