Jeremiah 6:20
“To what purpose does frankincense from Sheba come to me, and the sweet cane from a far country? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, and your sacrifices are not pleasing to me.””
What does Jeremiah 6:20 mean?
God is saying through the prophet Jeremiah that no amount of expensive religious ritual or imported luxury goods can substitute for a faithful, honest heart. The people were bringing the finest offerings (frankincense from distant Sheba and sweet cane from faraway lands), yet their sacrifices meant nothing because their lives were filled with injustice and disobedience. This speaks to a tension many of us still feel today: we can go through the motions of faith, show up faithfully, say the right words, or give generously, but if our hearts aren't genuinely turned toward God and toward loving others well, something essential is missing. God cares far more about the condition of our hearts and the integrity of our lives than about the impressiveness of our outward displays of devotion.
