Jeremiah 50:14
“Set yourselves in array against Babylon all around, all you who bend the bow; shoot at her. Spare no arrows; for she has sinned against Yahweh.”
What does Jeremiah 50:14 mean?
Jeremiah spoke these words during a time when Babylon was the dominant world power, yet God's prophet declared that judgment would come upon them. This isn't really about literal archery or military strategy, though it uses that language. Rather, Jeremiah is announcing that God sees Babylon's injustice and cruelty, and their reckoning will be certain and complete. The repeated calls to action ("set yourselves in array," "shoot at her," "spare no arrows") emphasize that this judgment won't be halfhearted or incomplete. When Jeremiah says Babylon has sinned against the Lord, he's pointing to a deeper accountability than earthly power or politics.
