Jeremiah 50:13

Because of Yahweh’s wrath she won’t be inhabited, but she will be wholly desolate. Everyone who goes by Babylon will be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues.

What does Jeremiah 50:13 mean?

Jeremiah spoke these words during a time when Babylon seemed invincible, yet he proclaimed that God's judgment would make the great city completely abandoned and forgotten. The image of people hissing (like they do at something repulsive) as they pass the ruins shows how thoroughly Babylon's glory would vanish, leaving only shock and disgust in its wake. This wasn't Jeremiah's personal prediction but God's promise that no earthly power, no matter how dominant, stands beyond God's reach and justice. For those in hard seasons, it's a reminder that human might and pride are temporary, while God's purposes endure.
