“Don’t you fear me?’ says Yahweh ‘Won’t you tremble at my presence, who have placed the sand for the bound of the sea, by a perpetual decree, that it can’t pass it? Though its waves toss themselves, yet they can’t prevail. Though they roar, they still can’t pass over it.’”
What does Jeremiah 5:22 mean?
God is reminding his people of his power through something they witnessed daily: the ocean's waves crashing against the shore, unable to cross the boundary of sand. No matter how violently the sea rages, it stays within limits God set for it. The point isn't really about the beach, though. God is asking why his people fear him less than they respect the laws of nature itself, when he's the one who established all those laws in the first place. This is God speaking to people who had drifted into ignoring him, and he's gently asking a hard question: if you see evidence of my power and faithfulness every single day in creation, why wouldn't you trust me with your own life? The trembling or reverence he's calling for isn't about terror, but about recognizing someone's reliability and strength.
