“I will take the remnant of Judah, that have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to live there, and they will all be consumed. They will fall in the land of Egypt. They will be consumed by the sword and by the famine. They will die, from the least even to the greatest, by the sword and by the famine. They will be an object of horror, an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach.”
What does Jeremiah 44:12 mean?
God is warning the surviving remnant of Judah not to flee into Egypt, telling them that if they go anyway, they will face complete destruction there. After Jerusalem's fall, desperate refugees wanted to escape to Egypt thinking they'd find safety, but God makes clear through Jeremiah that running to Egypt is running away from His protection, not toward it. This wasn't God being harsh for its own sake, but rather the natural consequence of abandoning trust in Him during their hardest moment. The warning captures the severity of what happens when we choose our own plan over God's guidance, especially when we're vulnerable and afraid.
