“Now, behold, I release you today from the chains which are on your hand. If it seems good to you to come with me into Babylon, come, and I will take care of you; but if it seems bad to you to come with me into Babylon, don’t. Behold, all the land is before you. Where it seems good and right to you to go, there go.””
What does Jeremiah 40:4 mean?
The Babylonian commander Nebuzaradan is speaking to Jeremiah after Jerusalem's fall, and his words carry unexpected kindness: he's removing the prophet's physical chains and offering him a genuine choice rather than forced exile. The commander recognizes something valuable in Jeremiah and wants him to decide freely whether to go to Babylon (where he'll be cared for) or stay in the devastated land.
